Microbiological pollution and ocular infection in CAD operators: an on-site investigation

Article Abstract:

Research with industrial operators at video display unit workstations and computer assisted design tasks suggests bacteria from working surfaces and equipment can be transferred to the eyes. Preventing eating at workstations, improved hand hygiene, and periodic checks for environmental sanitation and eye health could prevent eye infection rates.

Observation distance and blinking rate measurement during on-site investigation: new electronic equipment

Article Abstract:

The authors offer a new electronic device that measures the observaton distance for modern work activities and human blinking rate. This research should help quantify the relatively high rates of asthenopia experienced by "indoor-near-work operators," possibly through a combination of cognitive effort and chemical and physical agents.

Viewing distance variation and related opthalmological changes in office activities with and without VDUs

Article Abstract:

Visual display units (VDU) activities decrease the fusional convergence width and cause greater asthenopic disturbances. The relation between asthenopia and office work is analyzed through studies in viewing distance variation and related ophthalmological changes in office work done with or without VDUs. Quantification of the near point of accommodation and fusional convergence enable a precise measurement of the occupational load. The symptomatology shows higher number of disturbances with VDUs. To regulate the prevalence of asthenopic activities, its use must be alternated with phases of far vision.
