As a matter of interest

Article Abstract:

Wall Street has been affected by fear, and this is especially true for internet and technology stocks, but a rally could occur when institutional and private investors decide to seek weak stocks. Stocks become attractive when they move into new high ground. There are attractions in finding stocks at a low price and seeing them rise in value, but this involves being correct about the fundamental story. US interest rates are likely to be raised slowly over a long period which could continue until 2001, so an economic slowdown is likely to affect stocks in 2001-2002.

Wall St's real interest rate hope

Article Abstract:

US stock prices appear to be reasonably priced in relation to bonds, but bonds may be expensive. The US should achieve a budget surplus, yet bond yields are high in real terms. This may be because the surplus is forecast to be short lived, and a deficit may occur if US economic growth slows. Planned tax cuts and an ageing population could also lead to a deficit. Real US interest rates are affected by present and expected future government borrowing. Real yields could drop if savings increase as a result of stock price falls.
