Article Abstract:

Birmingham and the West Midlands has an unemployment rate of 10.9% compared with 8.4% for the UK as a whole. The rate is higher in Birmingham, at 13.6%, while some parts of the inner city have rates of over 20%. The rate is also higher among people aged 20-years-old to 34-years-old. Manufacturing employment dropped between the 1980s recession and the 1990s recession to a little over 550,000 from almost 1 million. Services activities have grown but not as much as in the UK as a whole.
