What must be done

Article Abstract:

There is a need for a number of changes to help private investors in the United Kingdom, and some progress has been made in this area, but it is limited. The new Financial Services Authority has more power, but the Stock Exchange still regulates the market. Private investors have not been included in committees investigating corporate governance. Companies do not automatically send full reports to private investors. There has been progress in abolishing the minimum size of deal needed for order-driven trading.

Charting Hong Kong's financial future

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong will be handed over to China in Jun 1997. Hong Kong is a rich country with a per capita income above that of the UK, while China is economically backward. Hong Kong already depends on China through its internetional trade, and China depends on investment from Hong Kong. The financial markets of the two countries will become more integrated after the handover. Links could also develop between Taiwan and China, and this integration should help the stock markst and the economy of China.

Investors see red as phones fail

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom private investors could not always deal using the phone when stock prices dropped in late Oct 1997. Stockbrokers received more calls than usual, and some investors had to wait for their calls to be answered. Investors were seeking to sell as prices dropped, and buy as they rose. Institutional investors had sold holdings in Sep 1997, while private investors had bought holdings. One broker stated that he did not notice a panic during the stock price fall.
