A monopoly ends with a record profit

Article Abstract:

Cesky Telecom (CT) (Prague, Czech Republic), telecommunication firm, saw a preliminary profit of CEK 6.4 bil in 2000, down 3% from 1999. The firm's proceeds totalled more than CEK 57 bil in 2000, up 10% from 1999. The largest share in the growth of the firm's revenues was represented mainly by data services, an increase in proceeds from fees for the utilization of telephone stations and the proceeds of the mobile telephone operator Eurotel (Czech Republic), in which CT holds a 51% stake. In 1999 Eurotel ensured nearly CEK 8 bil of CT's proceeds. Eurotel had 2.17 mil clients at the end of 2000, twice as many as at the beginning of 2000. CT increased the number of its clients connected to the Internet through the division OnLine in 2000. The number of the clients was 200,000 at the end of 2000 compared to 45,000 in 1999. CT dismissed 14% of its employees in 2000. Currently, it has 17,300 employees. The firm operated 3.85 mil telephone lines at the end of 2000.

In 2001 the firm plans to invest about CEK 15 bil, the same sum as in 2000. The investment will go primarily to the launching of new services, which should substitute smaller incomes from call fees and a negligible increase in the number of new customers.
