What will be required to guarantee the sustainability of U.S. agriculture in the 21st century?

Article Abstract:

Government efforts to promote sustainable agricultural in order to reduce the environmental damage caused by extant agricultural production processes will need to address the issue of farmers' property rights. The current framework of farmers' property rights will hamper any government efforts to impose sustainable agriculture. Agriculture is based on fee simple ownership of land and the right to entitlements as part of the social contract between farmers and society as a whole. To create sustainable agricultural, social needs must be incorporated into the agenda of agricultural production including agricultural education to make an environment conducive to environmental concerns.

Henry A. Wallace, champion of a durable agriculture

Article Abstract:

Henry A. Wallace, Secretary of Agriculture and later Vice President under Franklin D. Roosevelt, was an enlightened leader and holistic thinker for agriculture throughout the world. His family has long played this role to American farmers, but Henry instituted the greatest changes in the country's policies. As idealist and realist he supported reciprocal trade agreements, instituted government support of food prices and full granaries, and encouraged organic farming.
