Emerald is a new investment trust which specialises in both Northern Ireland and Ireland. The fund is geared to long-term investors, and this means that Ireland's long-term prospects should be examined. Ireland has seen high growth at 4.6% average in the five years to 1994, with inflation low at 2.7%. Ireland could be adversely affected by US interest rates. Overseas investment is responsible for three quarters of the manufactured exports of Ireland, and foreign funds could be withdrawn. European Union funding could also be reduced.
