Where do capabilities come from and how do they matter? A study in the software services industry

Article Abstract:

Emphasis is laid on the notion of capabilities as an important source of competitive advantage with reference to where and how these capabilities emerge and how they influence firm performance. It is suggested that the marginal returns to acquiring different capabilities might be different and an understanding of such trade-offs could improve firms' decisions to improve and acquire capabilities.

Organizational research evaluates the effectiveness of strategic alliances within the semiconductor and steel industries. The concept of network embeddedness is discussed, which can be used to analyze the relationship between a firm and its resources across an industry.
