Whitecroft: it's time to switch off

Article Abstract:

Whitecroft has been affected by problems in the UK lighting market, in turn affected by problems in the commercial and industrial real estate industry. Lighting represents some 67% of Whitecroft's profit. The company is also involved in industrial doors and conditions are also difficult in this market, while its cotton fiber division could be affected by a drop in the price of viscose which is used as an alternative to cotton. The company's profit forecast for 1996 has been revised downwards to 8 million pounds sterling.

FW Thorpe: regaining the light

Article Abstract:

FW Thorpe is a UK company that produces light fitting and has given a profit warning for 1995 to 1996. The UK market for light fittings has not performed well, and the company's profit fall is partly due to high levels of investment which should bring benefits in the long term. The company is involved in some niche markets such as lighting for hazardous sites. Its main business is linked to the fortunes of the UK real estate industry but its record is solid.

Lights at the end of the tunnel for Thorpe

Article Abstract:

FW Thorpe is a commercial lighting company which is benefiting from an upturn in the construction industry and has performed well, despite problems in 1996. These were caused by a new plant brought on stream when demand was dipping, margin pressure and intense competition. The company has moved away from standard products into specialist areas like light controls and illuminated signs. The company's stock price does not reflect its performance.
