Why is UK unemployment rising?

Article Abstract:

The rate of unemployment in the UK showed an increase over the course of 2006, reflecting a combination of slightly weaker demand by firms and rapidly rising labor supply, that is, an increase in the rate of population growth due to net migration augmented by declining inactivity. The higher jobless rate indicates rising slack in the labor market, which is likely to bear down on wage increases and hence on consumer price inflation and ultimately, interest rates.

Another great British empire

Article Abstract:

Employment has become more flexible, which is one of the reasons put forward for the UK's comparative economic success across the last decade. However, vulnerable and often bewildered employees, who see themselves as victims of the system, can see little sense or logic in the processes they find themselves involved with thereby bringing in unhappiness and absence grow, which is of no good to anyone in the management hierarchy.
