Wickes

Article Abstract:

Wickes will sell its builders' merchant chain, Builders Mate, acquired in 1988 at the peak of the UK construction boom along with other parts of Hunter Timber. The company is studying plans for the remainder of Hunter Timber. Wickes will retain its retail chain which is profitable and which serves both trade and private customers. A profit of 37 million pounds sterling is forecast by Smith New Court for full-year 1995 though this would be affected by disposals of Hunter Timber or Builders Mate..

Newman Tonks

Article Abstract:

Newman Tonks has reduced its gearing following a disposal of 12 businesses for 28.5 million pounds. The company is concentrating on architectural hardware such as door fittings. Research spending can be increased following the disposals. Public sector construction spending has been cut, as have the commercial and private residential sectors, and this will affect Newman Tonks' profit for 1995, estimated at 20.2 million pounds for the full year.
