Will Europe sink or swim in the global whirlpool?

Article Abstract:

The economic outlook for Europe appears uncertain despite the smooth introduction of the single currency in Jan 1999. The launch of the euro involved few technical difficulties and initial trading in the currency trading was steady. Furthermore, there is increasing speculation that the UK, Denmark and Sweden may seek entry into the European Monetary Union earlier than expected. Nevertheless, the euro's introduction has not changed the fact that Europe needs to maintain a respectable growth rate in the wake of the international economic downturn. In addition, the high unemployment rate in most Western European countries remains a problem. There are two possible scenarios for the region's economy in 1999 and 2000, namely, a soft landing for the economic and a hard landing. These scenarios are discussed.
