Year of the cull

Article Abstract:

There has been speculation that takeovers could become common among UK investment trusts following a bid by Undervalued Assets Trust for Pilot. Exmoor Dual has been subject to a bid and is considering liquidation. Investors should be wary of predators seeking to acquire a trust at a wide discount since investors will be unable to realise their assets' true value. There are reasons which constrain bids for investment trusts such as the small size of the investment trust community and the reluctance of managers to create enemies.

Fishing for chips

Article Abstract:

Investors attracted to the technology sector can use collective investment vehicles as a way of diversifying risks, yet few global technology funds have been set up in the UK. Investors have tended to avoid specialist technology despite strong performances from some funds. There is a wide variation in performance between different segments of the technology sector, and funds have to be selective. Software, networking, the internet and personal computers are seen as key areas by SocGen and others.
