You can look but you can't buy... yet: From little acorns grow hugely successful businesses.some will remain in private hands for ever but many will opt, eventually, for a stock market listing

Article Abstract:

There are many successful businesses with strong brands that could opt for a stock market listing, such as Thomas Pink shirt makers, Dyson vacuum cleaners, Formula One racing and NM Rothschild bank. A review looks at seven privately owned companies that are expected to remain privately owned for the foreseeable future, although several have indicated that a flotation may not be out of the question. They are RAK Publishing (RAK Records), TVR, Pret A Manger, The Carphone Warehouse, The Ministry of Sound and Wagamama. John Lewis, a department store and supermarket company has a partnership trust structure which makes a listing out of the question.

Buying direct from the vendor: the employers, customers, buyer and vendor in a rather unconventional MBO have all walked away happy. Why was the deal so successful?

Article Abstract:

Director of commercial and legal affairs at ICL, a computer manufacturer, has described the sale of Guardian Computer Services, its subsidiary, to ECI Ventures, as a positive transaction, benefiting everyone. The Guardian deal was a purchase direct from the vendor, rather than a conventional buy out, which meant the absence of commercial risk to the vendor.
