Ziff-Davis goes public; filings show high debt resulted in a net loss

Article Abstract:

Ziff-Davis is incurring losses despite the strong performance of its combined publishing and trade show operations. Its filings for an initial public offering on Apr 29, 1998 show that the net loss since 1996 is due to high debt costs. While the company posted operating profits in 1997 of $50 million on revenue of $866.2 million in its publishing unit, and gained $59 million on revenue of $287.5 million from its trade shows, its debt service costs have led to a net loss of $71.2 million as operating income failed to offset interest expense.

Softbank folding U.S. trade shows into new ZD Comdex & Forums

Article Abstract:

Softbank Corp has embarked on a corporate reorganization which involves putting the management of Comdex/Fall under the control of Ziff Davis. Thus, the Comdex show scheduled on Nov 17, 1997 and projected to attract over 200,000 attendees in Las Vegas, NV, will be renamed ZD Comdex. The new development is attributable to Softbank's strategy of turning its two US computer trade show units, namely, Softbank Forums and Softbank Comdex, into the new ZD Comdex and Forums, which fall under the Ziff-Davis umbrella.
