Teaching going-to-work skills - a missing link in career development

Article Abstract:

College graduates need to be equipped with going-to-work skills before taking on their first jobs. Unfortunately, most college placement offices do not provide such job qualification services. They teach students job-hunting strategies but fail to instruct them on how to deal with issues not related to their assigned jobs. Such issues include their rapport with other employees, grasp of company politics and knowledge of the organization's work ethics. Techniques on how college recruiting offices can furnish the students with going-to-work skills are presented.

Does Intern/co-op experience translate into career progress and satisfaction?

Article Abstract:

A study of the impact on the career prospects of graduates with co-op or intern experience indicates that work experience in particular plays an important role in furthering graduates' careers. The study, based on graduates from a private liberal arts institution in Pennsylvania, backed findings of a study by C.M. Jagacinski and others, which showed that students should ensure that they have work experience related to their future career.
