A model system to study the insertion of cholesterol into a phospholipid monolayer

Article Abstract:

Colloidal probe atomic force microscopy (AFM) is used to study the interaction between a surface bearing tethered cholesterol groups and an egg phosphatidylcholine (egg-PC) monolayer. The occurrence of short-range attraction and adhesion is attributed to the insertion of cholesterol groups into the phospholipid monolayer and the efficiency of insertion is reduced due to steric effects at higher surface concentrations.

Effects of cholesterol on the properties of phospholipid membranes. 3. Local lateral structure

Article Abstract:

A detailed analysis of the local lateral environment of the DMPC and cholesterol molecules in their mixed, fully hydrated membranes is presented. It is concluded that the lateral condensation of the phospholipid membranes occurring upon adding cholesterol to the system is solely due to observed specific interaction occurring between neighboring DMPC- cholesterol pairs.

Effect of cholesterol on the chain-ordering transition of 1-palmitoyl-2-arachidonoyl phosphatidylcholine

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to investigate the phase behaviour, dynamics and chain order of bilayers made up of 1-palmitoyl-2-arachidonoyl phosphatidylcholine perdeuterated on the saturated acyl chain alone and in mixed bilayers containing 15 mol % and 30 mol % cholesterol. Small differences are seen in the response of the bilayer transition and dynamics to cholesterol.
