AUSTRIA: KREMS CHEMIE FOCUSING ON WOOD INDUSTRY

Article Abstract:

Austrian Krems Chemie GesmbH, which belongs to Neste Chemicals Oy of Finland, is to cut back activities in the field of iron oxide. It has already given up aluminium sulphate activities to the parent. Instead, the Krems-based company is to focus on synthetic resins for the wood board industry (which contribute 60% to turnover), paper chemicals and polyester. Krems Chemie expects a decline in turnover in 1999. In 1998 sales grew 8% to Sch 2.26bn and operating profit 21% to Sch 55mn.

SWITZERLAND: CHEMICAL TRADE SURPLUS GROWING

Article Abstract:

In 1998, Switzerland's chemical export surplus increased 4.7%. Chemical exports reached an all-time high, growing 5.6% to SFr 31.3bn, while imports grew 6% to SFr 17.8bn. Deliveries to the European Union grew 6.4% and accounted for 60% of total exports. Sales to Latin America grew 12%, the US 3.6% and Asia 2.4%. Chemical imports from the EU grew 5.6% and accounted for 80% of total imports. Imports from the US grew 25.3%, while those from Asia fell by 0.5%.
