Binding of surfactants onto preadsorbed layers of bovine serum albumin at the silica-water interface

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the binding of nonionic and anionic surfactants onto preadsorbed layers of bovine serum albumin at the hydrophilic silicon oxide/water interface using specular neutron reflection. Deuterated sodium dodecyl sulfate was prepared by reacting deuterated dodecanol with chlorosulfonic acid in dry ethyl ether below 5 degrees C. Results indicated that the absorption of bovine serum albumin onto the hydrophilic silicon oxide/water interface generated a sideways-on monolayer.

The structure and composition of ethyl hexadecanoate layers spread on aqueous solutions of hexaethylene glycol monododecyl ether

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the structure and composition of a mixed layer of oil and surfactant at the air/water interface. Specular neutron reflection combined with deuterium labeling was utilized to carry out the analysis. The insertion of the ester oil into the C12E6 layer was then examined. Results indicated that the insertion of the ester oil molecules forces the alkyl chains and the ethoxylate headgroups to become more vertically oriented.

Effect of pH on the adsorption of bovine serum albumin at the silica/water interface studied by neutron reflection

Article Abstract:

The structure and composition of the bovine serum albumin (BSA) layer above and below its isoelectric point (IP) are studied. Results show that BSA adsorption is determined by pH while surface excess is reduced by changing the pH from the IP. The structure of the adsorbed layers under a bulk BSA concentration of 0.5 g/cu dm also can also be fitted to a single uniform layer distribution over all pH conditions.
