CZECHIA: BALAKOM LEADING IN COATINGS MARKET
Article Abstract:
According to a reader's letter from Rudolf Winkler, chairman of Balakom a.s., his company is the leading producer of paints and coatings in the Czech Republic. In 1997, Balakom produced 9,770 t of paints and coatings and 1,076 t of solvents and adhesive cements. Colorlak a.s., which had been mentioned in the magazine as the Czech market leader, produced 9,270 t of paints and coatings and 2,260 t of solvents and cements. In 1998, Balakom, which employs 230 people, is aiming at an output of 11,500 t. The company has recently ceased solvent production and is now focusing on solvent-free coatings.

A BfAI study sees potential for foreign paint and varnish manufacturers in the US. Despite extensive local production, the US is the leading importer of paints and varnishes. The report identified potential for the import of e.g. powder coatings, electro-coating, spray coatings, high-performance coatings and product maintenance. Price is the primary competitive factor.
