Changing reactivity of a bimetallic surface via oxidation: reactions of methanol on oxygen-covered Co thin films

Article Abstract:

Experiments were performed to investigate the selectivity of methanol reaction in cobalt (Co) thin films deposited on molybdenum(110) surfaces. X-ray photoelectron, temperature-programmed desorption and low-energy electron optics were performed on the Co thin film samples. The breakup of the oxygen-hydrogen bond in Co thin films and stable methanol binding to the Co surface were observed. The alteration of the methanol reaction by oxygen was comparable to the behavior of mid-transition metals.

The role of oxygen vacancies in methanol reaction on oxidized Mo(110)

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the reactions of CH3OH on thin film oxides formed on Mo(110) using a range of oxidation conditions and thermal treatments to prepare surfaces with and without Mo+O species. Changes in reactivity in the presence of Mo=O species is tested by varying conditions for the preparation of surface oxide layers. Results provide evidence that oxygen generated by the reaction is deposited in high-coordination sites only.

Stabilization of nitrosyls by surface oxygen: structure and reactivity of NO on oxygen-modified Mo(110)

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the influence of preadsorbed atomic oxygen on nitric oxide structure and reactivity on Mo(110). The study was carried out in two separate ultrahigh vacuum chambers supporting LEED optics and a cylindrical mirror analyzer for Auger electron spectroscopy. Experimental results indicated that the desorption temperature of nitric oxide correlated with the strength of the metal-nitric oxide interaction.
