Charge carrier transfer across the silica nanoparticle/water interface

Article Abstract:

The first observation of efficient production of hydrated electrons in aqueous silica suspensions upon absorption of ionizing radiation by the silica particles is reported. This was gleaned from the determination of the yield of hydrated electrons in irradiated silica suspensions at very high particle concentrations. Observations establish that energy absorbed by solid nanoparticles crosses the solid-liquid interface and yields hydrated electrons due to an interfacial charge-transfer process. These electrons then undergo their rich chemical pathways in the aqueous phase.

Charge separation across the silica nanoparticle/water interface

Article Abstract:

A short pulse of electrons in the presence of scavengers of OH radicals was used to irradiate aqueous suspensions of silica particles at high concentrations. Minimized adsorption was the primary reason why the scavengers were chosen on the particle surface. It was observed that no holes crossed the particle/water interface to generate OH radicals. All the holes that were made by ionizing radiation in the silica were still in the particle which was in contrast to the electrons which had escaped particles in the water.
