Comparison of ribonucleic acid homopolymer ionization energies and charge injection barriers

Article Abstract:

Thin films of guanosine and uridine ribonucleic acid (RNA) homopolymers, poly rG and poly rU, were grown in high vacuum in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite by using electrospray deposition and the sample surface was characterized with X-ray and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy. The comparison with the earlier results on cytidine and adenosine RNA homopolymers, poly rC and poly rA, indicated significant ionization energy and charge injection barrier differences between purines and pyrimidines.

Catalytic oxidation activity of [Pt.sub.3][O.sub.4] surfaces and thin films

Article Abstract:

The thermodynamic stability of platinum oxide surfaces and thin films and their reactivities toward oxidation of carbon compounds are analyzed by using first-principles atomistic thermodynamics calculations and molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory. The results have indicated a high catalytic oxidation activity of [Pt.sub.3][O.sub.4] phases that can be relevant in the contexts of Pt-based automobile catalysis and gas sensors.
