Core-shell and hollow nanocrystal formation via small molecule surface photodissociation; Ag at the rate of [Ag.sub.2]Se as an example

Article Abstract:

Metallic Ag nanoparticles are converted to [Ag.sub.2]Se nanoparticles at ambient temperature and open atmosphere by ultraviolet (UV) photodissociation of adsorbed C[Se.sub.2] on the Ag core surface and the photolysis can be prevented at any stage yielding Ag at the rate of [Ag.sub.2]Se core-shell structures of different thickness. The photochemical method can be used to carry out a direct room-temperature phototransformation of metallic into semiconductor nanostructures already assembled on surface templates.

Direct functionalization of the hydroxyl group of the 6-mercapta-1-hexanol (MCH) ligand attached to gold nanoclusters

Article Abstract:

A study prepared and characterized Au-MCH nanoclusters of (1.5 plusmn 0.3) nm diameter (MCH = 6-mercapto-1hexanol, HS-(CH2)6-OH). While in nanocluster form dispersed in solution, the OH terminal group of the MCH ligand is directly functionalized through small organic molecule reactions in near-quantitative yield to generate ester, carbamate, carboxylic acid, nitrile, and aldehyde groups, as recorded by the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy.
