Fluorescence and triplet quantum yields of arenes on surfaces

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to measure the fluorescence and triplet quantum yields of pyrene and other arenes on SiO2. A Varian Cary-3 spectrophotometer was used to measure the spectra of liquid and solid samples of pyrene, perylene, coronene and other oxides on the silica gel. Lower fluorescence and quantum yields were observed for the arenes on the SiO2. This was attributed to charge-transfer states caused by the adsorption of some arene molecules. Only 10% of pyrene was loaded on the surfaces of the silica gel due to a low concentration of the charge-transfer sites.

Reactions of pyrene excited states with oxygen on the surface of porous silica gel and similar surfaces

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the oxygen quenching of the singlet state of pyrene adsorbed on amorphous silica gel. Pulsed laser and rapid spectrophotometric techniques were utilized to carry out the analysis. Results indicated that decreases in the efficiency of the triplet quenching correlated with increases in oxygen pressure and is associated with the formation of an intermediate O2-triplet state complex.

Photinduced reactions of pyrene with carbon tetrachloride on porous silica gel

Article Abstract:

A new study investigates the excited-state quenching reactions of pyrene on porous silica gel surfaces by coadsorbed carbon tetrachloride. It is shown that carbon tetrachloride is more strongly adsorbed onto silica gel than oxygen.
