Fluorinated microemulsions: a study of the phase behavior and structure

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the phase behavior and geometry of microemulsions derived from perfluorocarbon acid (PFOA) with water and two fluorocarbons, namely, perflourohexane and perfluorooctane (PFO), and from an ethylene oxide ester of PFOA, F(CF2)7-CO-(OCH2CH2)7.2-OCH3 with water and PFO. Results showed that F(CF2)7-CO-(OCH2CH2)7.2-OCH3 does not possess good emulsifying capability due to the imbalance between the hydrophilic and the fluorinated chains. The microstructure of the H2O/PFO/PFOA ternary system was revealed in detail through small-angle neutron-scattering experiments.

Electrochemical layer-by-layer growth of palladium on an Au(111) electrode surface: evidence for important role of adsorbed Pd complex

Article Abstract:

An electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and in situ electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) were used to study the adsorption and electrochemical reduction of PdCl(sub 4)(super 2-) on an Au(111) electrode in H2SO4 solution containing PdCl(sub 4)(super 2-). The palladium deposition was found to proceed with an epitaxial layer-by-layer growth mode. The adlayer of PdCl(sub 4)(super 2-) was found to be on the deposited palladium layer.
