Formation and transition of highly ordered structures of polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes

Article Abstract:

The formation and transition of highly ordered structures of polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes were analyzed in terms of the surfactant alkyl chain length and the hydrophobicity of the polyelectrolyte chain. To this end, the nanostructures of water-equilibrated complexes, which are formed by slightly cross-linked copolymer gels of poly(sodium methacrylate/N-isopropylacrilamide) and completely charged sodium polystyrenesulfonate, respectively, were investigated using the small-angle X-ray scattering technique. Results show that the alkyl chain length of the surfactant has a significant influence on the formation and transition of highly ordered structures inside polyelectrolyte gel-surfactant complexes.

Synthesis and volume phase transition of poly(methacrylic acid-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) microgel particles in water

Article Abstract:

A novel class of cross-linked, nearly monodisperse and random copolymerized microgel particles based on methacrylic acid and N-isopropylacrylamide of various content was synthesized in aqueous solution. The volume phase transitions of the methacrylic acid and N-isopropylacrylamide copolymer microgel particles were also investigated by laser light scattering. Experimental results showed that the polymerization kinetics, colloidal stability and size of the microgel particles varied with the comonomer composition.

Supramolecular structures of polyethylenimine-sodium alkyl sulfate complexes

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to investigate the supramolecular structures of complexes formed by polyethylenimine (PEI) interacting with oppositely charged surfactants of sodium alkyl sulfate. Three different nanostructures of Lamellar II, 2D hexagonal packing of cylinders, and Ia3d cubic are observed when branch PEI, linear PEI and linear polyvinylamine (PVA) with similar molecular weights are used to complex with surfactants of SC9S and SC10S.
