Formation of gold nanoparticles catalyzed by platinum nanoparticles: Assessment of the catalytic mechanism

Article Abstract:

A demonstration that the Pt nanoparticle catalyzed formation of gold nanoparticles in aqueous solution involves the mediation of H species preadsorbed on a Pt nanocrystal surface (Pt-H) is presented. The favorable dissociative adsorption of H2 on the Pt nanocrystal surface produces Pt-H species, which has a higher reducing power than H2 or acrylate in the solution for the reduction of Au[Cl.sub.4.sup.-].

Kinetic and thermodynamic assessments of the mediator-template assembly of nanoparticles

Article Abstract:

A study of the kinetic and thermodynamic factors governing the mediator-template assembly of gold nanoparticles into spherical assemblies in solutions is described. The mediator-template assembly of nanoparticles is an enthalpy-driven process and the enthalpy change is close to the magnitude of the van der Waals interaction energy for alkyl chains and the condensation energy of hydrocarbons.

AFM probing of thermal activation of molecularly linked nanoparticle assembly

Article Abstract:

The results from the atomic force microscopy (AFM) investigation of the thermal activation of alkanethiolate-linked gold nanoparticles on planar substrates are presented. The fundamental determination of the size and spatial evolution of metal nanoparticles with different molecular capping or linking properties on substrates, with different chemical and physical natures, is discussed.
