Formation of ultrasharp vertically aligned Cu-Si nanocones by a DC plasma process

Article Abstract:

An effective method is described for the production of ultrasharp vertically oriented silicon nanocones with tip radii as small as 5 nm via an acetylene and ammonia dc plasma process. The mechanism for the formation of these structures is reactive ion etching of the silicon substrate facilitated by copper seed particles and it is shown that by patterning the seed and etch barrier materials the location of the nanocones can be predetermined.

Effect of apical defects and doped atoms on field emission of boron nitride nanocones

Article Abstract:

The field-emission performance of prototype boron nitride (BN) nanocones is analyzed by using all-electron density-functional theory method and the effects of apical defects and doping/adsorption on the field emission are evaluated. The analysis has indicated that BN nanocones are considered as an alternative cold-emission electron source.

Comment on "acidity of a Cu-bound histidine in the binuclear center of cytochrome c oxidase"

Article Abstract:

A model of proton pumping by cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) is developed, in which one of the histidine ligands to the enzyme [Cu.sub.B] redox center plays the role of the pump element. The uncertainties found in the existing theoretical methods have shown that more work is required to make theoretical predictions more reliable.
