CHINA: POLYCARBONATE INVESTMENT BY BAYER

Article Abstract:

German Bayer AG of Leverkusen is planning to set up a fully integrated chemicals complex in Shanghai Chemical Industry Park in Caojing, China. Together with Shanghai Chloralkali Co, Bayer is to build a polycarbonate production plant there. The first phase by 2003 involves production capacity of 50,000 tpy, which is to be doubled by 2005. The investment worth a total of EUR 470mn, to which Bayer will contribute 90%, will serve mainly the automotive and CD/DVD industries. Bayer is to raise its worldwide production capacity for Makrolon polycarbonate to 700,000 tpy by 2002 from 500,000 tpy in 1998. Longer-term plans for the Caojing project involve the production of polyurethane raw materials, basic chemical products, synthetic rubber and paint raw materials.
