Gramicidin a channel in a matrix from a semifluorinated surfactant monolayer

Article Abstract:

Partially fluorinated tetracosane, perfluorohexyloctadecane (F6H18) was applied to find a suitable matrix for gramicidin A to be transferred onto solid support for biosensor design. Opposite sign of the measured electric surface potential for gramicidin and semifluorinated alkane (SFA), resulting from different directions of the dipole moment vectors in both film molecules, implies that the ordered, antiparallel orientation of the dipole moments in the mixed gramicidin/SFA system could be responsible for its extremely high stability.

Effect of membrane environment on proton permeation through gramicidin A channels

Article Abstract:

Multistate empirical valence bond simulations are used for studying proton transport through gramicidin A channels embedded in two different lipid bilayers, glycerol 1-monooleate (GMO) and diphytanolphosphatidylcholine (DiPhPC). The quantitative and qualitative differences are discussed in terms of local bilayers structures, ordering of interfacial water and channel flexibility in the two environments.
