Host-guest complexation of neutral red with macrocyclic host molecules: Contrasting pK(sub a) shifts and binding affinities for cucurbit[7]uril and beta-cyclodextrin

Article Abstract:

The photophysical properties of the phenazine-based dye neutral red are examined in aqueous solution in the presence of the macrocyclic host molecule cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) by using ground-state absorption as well as steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements. The comparison of the complexation behavior of neutral red toward CB7 with that toward beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) has revealed that although both hosts have a hydrophobic cavity, additional recognition elements such as cation receptor sites at the portals of the cavity are quintessential to promote a strong and selective binding of fluorescent dyes.

Diffusion in a sol-gel-derived medium with a view toward biosensor applications

Article Abstract:

The diffusion of dyes and a fluorescence-labeled enzyme in a sol-gel-derived medium are studied using time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy and fluorescence recovery after photobleaching. The use of FRAP and time resolved fluorescence anisotropy techniques are found to be complementary in probing changes in matrix morphology and its effect on encapsulated enzymes, which are necessary in their usage for biosensor applications.

Dye/gelled colloidal photonic crystal composites and their reversible pH-responsive optical behaviors

Article Abstract:

The pH sensitive dyes are introduced into gelled colloidal photonic crystals (GCPCs) to form dye-doped GCPCs and their reversible pH-responsive optical behaviors are investigated. The results have shown that the optical behaviors of dye/gelled colloidal photonic crystal composites are reversible to the pH changes of their surrounding medium.
