Identification of the conformation of individual molecules by scanning tunneling microscopy

Article Abstract:

The -COOH group of 12 bromododecanoic acid molecules has been observed for the last time to adopt into the same substrate. Scanning tunneling microscopic data have shown that 12-bromododecanoic acid molecules self-assemble on graphite so that the molecule adopts a 25 degree angle between the direction of the hydrogen bond and the hydrocarbon backbone. 2-bromoheadecanoic acid molecules orient with a 53 degree angle between the hydrogen bond direction and the long molecular axis when physisorbed on the same graphite substrate.

Packing of HO(CH2)14COOH and HO(CH2)15COOH on graphite at the liquid-solid interface observed by scanning tunneling microscopy: methylene unit direction of self-assembly structures

Article Abstract:

Study is conducted to investigate the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) composed of 15-hydroxypentadecanoic acids and 16-hydroxyhexadecanoic acids with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the solution-graphite interface. A new type of odd/even effect can explain the difference between these two molecular patterns where different intermolecular hydrogen bonds are created depending on the presence of an odd or even number of carbon atoms in the molecular chain.

Manipulating self-assembly with achiral molecules: an STM study of chiral segregation by achiral adsorbates

Article Abstract:

The self-assembly of a mixture of hexadecanoic acid with racemic (R)/(S)-2-bromohexadecanoic acid are investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. Achiral molecules such as hexadecanoic acid are shown to have remarkable potential as tools to manipulate self-assembly and to induce enantiomeric resolution of racemic mixtures such as 2-bromohexadecanoic acids.
