Measuring aggregation in aqueous adipic acid solutions using a lock-and-key probe molecule

Article Abstract:

Acid/base equilibria is a key factor in the measurement of the steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence behavior of 1-pyrenecarboxylic acid (HPCA) in aqueous adipic acid solutions and the formation of a complex between HPCA and adipic acid with a formation constant of K(sub c) = 150 M(super -1). The lock-and-key probe molecule was used to ensure the proximity of the fluorescent moiety to the solution phase aggregation events of interest. The pH dependence of the chromophore response was observed in steady-state fluorescence data, while the rotational diffusion behavior of HPCA shows the presence of aggregates of adipic acid with the fluorophore.

Gauging the effect of impurities on lipid bilayer phase transition temperature

Article Abstract:

The gel-to-fluid phase transition behavior of unilamellar vesicles formed with 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) is reported. The results have shown that very little contaminant is required to cause a substantial change in the gel-to-fluid transition temperature, even though these contaminants do not alter the viscosity of the bilayer sensed by perylene, either above or below the melting transition.

Effect of positional substitution on the optical response of symmetrically disubstituted azobenzene derivatives

Article Abstract:

The influence on the spectroscopic and isomerization behavior of compounds in the presence of substituents on the azobenzenes phenyl rings is examined. The evaluation of the branching ratio for isomerization and the rate of trans isomer recovery is discussed.
