Metal particle growth during glucose hydrogenation over Ru/SiO2 evaluated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and electron microscopy

Article Abstract:

The stability of silica-supported Ru catalysts in the aqueous phase conversion of glucose to sorbitol is investigated and in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ru K edge reveal that air-exposed silica- supported Ru was in an oxidized state but is subsequently reduced in aqueous solutions saturated with 40 bar [H.sub.2] at 373 K. Results show that, in the presence of [H.sub.2]-saturated water, silica- supported Ru catalysts are unstable due to sintering of Ru particles.

Silica-encapsulated nanomagnetic particle as a new recoverable biocatalyst carrier

Article Abstract:

The synthesis and characterization of silica-encapsulated iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles of controlled dimension as an enzyme carrier is reported. The results have suggested that the optimum pH and thermal stability of the attached enzyme are greatly influenced by the local environment of the silica and it is shown that the immobilized enzyme can be recovered and reused upon repeated application of magnetic separation.
