Molecular structure and spectroscopy of a bacteriopurpurin. A new class of bacteriochlorin photosensitizers

Article Abstract:

The synthesis, spectral characterization and structural determination of a metal-free bacteriopurpurin, a paradigm for a new class of photosensitizers comprised of porphyrins at the saturation level of bacteriochlorins flanked by two annelated, exocyclic rings were reported. A very red-shifted Qy transition at 843 nm was exhibited by the molecule asn was readily oxidized to a pi cation radical with a distinctive EPR signal. The first stereochemical parameters for this new class of expanded bacteriochlorins was provided by the crystallographic results for bacteriopurpurin.

Supramolecular structures of the chlorophyll a' aggregate and the origin of the diastereoselective separation of chlorophyll a and a'

Article Abstract:

The supramolecular structure of the aggregate chlorophyll a' (Chl a') was examined in comparison with that of the Chl a aggregate in aqueous alcohol solutions. Infrared, resonance Raman and small-angle X-ray scattering measurements were performed on lyophilized precipitates of the aggregate colloids. The difference between the supramolecular structures of the Chl a and a' aggregates does not depend on the steric hindrance between the bulky substituents at the C13 2 and C17 positions but on the potential for forming rigid intermolecular hydrogen bonding networks.
