Novel porphyrin-incorporated hydrogels for photoactive intraocular lens biomaterials
Article Abstract:
Novel surface-modified hydrogel materials are developed by binding charge porphyrins TMPyP (tetrakis(4-N-methylpyridyl)porphyrin) and TPPS (tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin) to copolymers of HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) with either MAA (methacrylic acid) or DEAEMA (2-(diethylamino)ethylmethacrylate). The results have shown that the TPPS/DEAEMA:HEMA system is a less promising candidate as a postoperative antibacterial treatment for intraocular lenses than TMPyP in MAA:HEMA in which the porphyrin is localized at the surface but retains its ability to generate [O.sub.2] on photoexcitation.

Rigid films of an anionic porphyrin and a dialkyl chain surfactant
Article Abstract:
The surface pressure-area isotherms were used to study the structure of 2D complex formed at the air-water interface between the dialkyl chain cationic surfactant, dihexasdecyldimethylammonium bromide and tetrakis-(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphine. The electorstatic interactions at the interface gives rise to rigid complexes which show three structural regions on compression.
