Phase transitions of capillary-held liquids in a slit-like pore

Article Abstract:

Three new compounds having different vapor pressures are studied to extend the validity of the phenomenon and also to elucidate the nature of the anomalous behaviors observed in the vicinity of the phase boundaries. An evaporating liquid bridge has developed large refractive index gradients that have extended over a few micrometers from the edge of the meniscus, once the slit width is increased beyond the equilibrium Kelvin length.

Phase behavior of long-chain n-alkanes at one and between two mica surfaces

Article Abstract:

The observation of a surface phase transition for n-tetradecane (n-C14) films on mica, a substance that does not exhibit surface ordering at the liquid-vapor interface is reported. The study concluded that an increase in the area of the liquid-vapor interface relative to that of the liquid-mica interface facilitates freezing in the case of the longer chain alkanes, which show surface ordering at the liquid-vapor interface.

n-Octadecyltriethoxysilane monolayer coated surfaces in humid atmospheres: influence of capillary condensation on surface deformation and adhesion

Article Abstract:

The effect of the humidity on surface deformation and adhesion of mica surfaces using a surface forces apparatus is explained. The Maugis model of contact elasticity is used to make an analysis of these effects.
