Preparation and surface science characterization of model Ziegler-Natta catalysts. Role of undercoordinated surface magnesium atoms in the chemisorption of TiCl4 on MgCl2 thin films

Article Abstract:

The interaction between TiCl4 molecules with the surface of MgCl2 films have been studied with an emphasis on the role played by the surface Mg atoms. Ziegler-Natta catalysts have been prepared under ultra-high vacuum conditions by gas-phase deposition of MgCl2 and TiCl4 on a gold foil. Gas-phase deposition was also used in controlling the concentration of the surface Mg atoms. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ion-scattering spectroscopy and polymerization activity tests were used in investigating the model surfaces.

Surface reactions of molecular and atomic oxygen with carbon phosphide films

Article Abstract:

The surface reactions of atomic and molecular oxygen with carbon phosphide films were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Carbon phosphide films were produced by ion implantation of trimethylphosphine into polyethylene and the result from the study suggests that carbon phosphide films can be used as AO-resistant surface coatings on polymers.

Equilibrium surface composition of sulfuric acid films in contact with various atmospheric gases (HNO3, CO2, CH2O, Cl2, NO, NO2)

Article Abstract:

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to analyze the equilibrium composition of the near surface region of sulfuric acid in the presence of a number of atmospheric species. This work supports the view that surface-specific effects can be significant in atmospheric systems.
