Biophysical studies of model stratum corneum lipid monolayers by infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy and Brewster angle microscopy

Article Abstract:

A new study uses Brewster angle microscopy and absorption spectroscopy to investigate the phase behavior and molecular structure of one, two, and three component lipid models of the stratum corneum comprising ceramide, hydroxy fatty acid, cholesterol and perdeuterated palmitic acid.

Quantitative functional group orientation in Langmuir films by infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy: C=O groups in behenic acid methyl ester and sn2-(super13)C-DSPC:

Article Abstract:

Infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), is used to determine the orientation of carbonyl groups in behenic acid methyl ester (BME) and in sn2-(super 13)C 1,2 distearolyphosphatidylcholine in aqueous monolayer films. This analysis provides a new method for determining functional group orientation in monolayers and the approach, when coupled with X-ray and neutron reflectivity measurements will provide unique information about the structures and interactions of film constituents.

Kinetics of membrane raft formation: Fatty acid domains in stratum corneum lipid models

Article Abstract:

Mixtures of proteated and deuterated C(sub 30) alkanes in the solid state are examined as a reference system in order to provide comparative characterizations for the scissoring contour (SC) models. The experiments show that the method of Snyder and associates mostly for the kinetics of demixing in binary alkane mixtures could be useful extended to standard three component models of the SC barrier and may be to the native SC.
