Remarkable influence of silver islands on the enhancement of fluorescence from Eu3+ ion-doped silica gels

Article Abstract:

A greater enhancement of fluorescence from europium (Eu3+)-doped silica gels containing adsorbed silver (Ag) islands was developed by a simple methodology. The procedure calls for Eu3+-doped silica gels to be prepared by a sol-gel method and then immersion in a Ag sol for ca. 48 h to allow the adsorption of Ag islands on the pore surfaces of silica gels. The results showed that enhanced fluorescence originated from the local field enhancement around Eu3+ ions. This was caused by the electronic plasmon resistance of the Ag islands.

Block copolymer mediated synthesis of gold quantum dots and novel gold-polypyrrole nanocomposites

Article Abstract:

Monodisperse gold nanoparticles dispersed in polypyrrole (PPY) matrices have been derived using polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) having varying block lengths. The annealing process leads to the formation of single gold nanocluster cores in each micelle. Varying gold particle shapes can be produced by altering the preparation techniques. The procedure offers interesting prospects for gold-PPY nanocomposites in the field of molecular electronics.

High proton conductivity in porous P2O5-SiO2 glasses

Article Abstract:

The sol-gel method was used to prepare porous P2O5-SiO2 glasses. The pore properties of the glasses were altered by controlling the preparation conditions. Conductivity was found to rise linearly with increasing the product of the surface area and the reciprocal number of the pore radius.
