Scanning tunneling microscopy and theoretical study of competitive reactions in the dissociative chemisorption of CCl4 on iron oxide surfaces

Article Abstract:

Variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and theoretical ab initio computer simulations are used to study dissociative chemisorption and competitive surface chemistry of CCl4 on an iron-terminated Fe3O4 (111) 2x2 surface in an ultrahigh vacuum. The Fe3O4 (111) surface is exposed to CCl4 molecules at 224 K, slowly annealed to 500 K, and scanned at room temperature.

Electrostatic surface charge at aqueous/alpha-Al(sub 2)O(sub 3) single-crystal interfaces as probed by optical second-harmonic generation

Article Abstract:

Second harmonic generation spectroscopy was used to compare the charging behavior of the (0001) and (0002) crystallographic surfaces of alpha-Al(sub 2)O(sub 3). The results showed that the observed differences in hydrated surface structures of alpha-Al(sub 2)O(sub 3) (0001) and (0002) single-crystal substrates translated into differences in the surface acidity.

Controlled Al-doped single-crystalline silicon nitride nanowires synthesized via pyrolysis of polymer precursors

Article Abstract:

The control of Al concentration in the polymeric precursors is essential in the synthesis of single-crystalline nanowires of [Si.sub.3][N.sub.4] by pyrolysis. The Aluminium-doping has significant effect on the emission behavior of the nanowires.
