Structural, electrochemical, and photophysical properties of molecular shuttle attached to an acid-terminated self-assembled monolayer

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to investigate the structural, electrical and photophysical properties of a functionlized benzylic amide macrocycle and molecular shuttle that are anchored on the surface of an acid-terminated self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on gold. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggests that the molecules are linked to the SAM by hydrogen bonding.

Grafting of benzylic amide macrocycles onto acid-terminated self-assembled monolayers studied by XPS, RAIRS, and contact angle measurements

Article Abstract:

The macrocycles such as catenanes and rotaxanes can be grafted onto acid-terminated self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) by either chemical modification or physical adsorption. Catenanes and rotaxanes have great potential as components for nanoscale devices in the form of molecular shuttles, switches, and information storage systems.

Electrode surface modification by a spirobifluorene derivative: An XPS and electrochemical investigation

Article Abstract:

Single layers of spirobifluorene were obtained by grafting the molecules onto a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (11-MUA) on gold. Results showed that the covalently bonded spirobifluorene SAMs act as an effective barrier to both ion penetration and heterogeneous electron transfer.
