Switzerland: Slow growth in paint market

Article Abstract:

The Swiss paints and varnishes market is estimated to be growing by between 1% and 3% in 2001 and 2002. This follows low growth already in 1999 and 2000, after years of stagnation. The turnover of the Swiss paint industry is estimated about SFr 1.2bn, of which SFr 400mn is generated with printing inks. Seventy of the 80 or so paint manufacturers in Switzerland are members of the trade association VSLF. The members of the association have a profit ratio of around 5.9%. The Swiss market for architectural paints is estimated 45,000 tonnes per year. Annual sales of industrial paints are estimated at SFr 250mn. Sales consist of 9,000 tonnes of liquid paints and 2,000 tonnes of powder coatings. The printing ink market comprises 15,000 tonnes worth SFr 145mn. The market for wood protection products is estimated 11,000 tonnes worth SFr 70mn and that for anti-corrosion products 3,500 tonnes worth SFr 30mn.
