Theory of self-assembled tubules and helical ribbons

Article Abstract:

A survey of theoretical approaches for explaining the formation of tubules and helical ribbons in systems of chiral amphiphilic molecules is presented. Three models based on theoretical nonchiral effects are reviewed and argued that, although each model considers a physical effect that might occur in some system, these model cannot account for key features of these structures that are observed experimentally.

Two-dimensional assemblies of banana-shaped liquid crystal molecules on HOPG surface

Article Abstract:

Two-dimensional assemblies of a series of banana-shaped liquid crystal molecules, 1-3-phenylene bis[4-(4-n-alkylphenyliminomethyl) benzoates] are investigated on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface. The results demonstrate the effects of the molecular structures on the adlayer arrangement and would be helpful in fabricating two-dimensional molecular structures on solid surfaces.

Structure-property correlations in model compounds of oligomer liquid crystals

Article Abstract:

Structure-property correlations of a several model compounds for oligomer liquid crystals (LCs) are investigated. The compounds investigated are monomers- C6H5O(CH2)xCH3 (x=4 and 5), dimers- C6H5O(CH2)OC6H5 (x=3, 4, 5, and 6) and tetramers- C6H5O(CH2)xOC6H4O(CH2)xOC6H5 (x= 5 and 6).
