Characterization of mixed micelles of SDS and a sugar-based nonionic surfactant as a variable reaction medium

Article Abstract:

Small-angle neutron scattering are employed to characterize mixed micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate and the nonionic sugarbased surfactant dodecylmalono-bis-N-methylglucamide as a reaction medium are presented. The interpretation of the results from time resolved flourescence quenching, electron paramagnetic resonance and small-angle neutron scattering methods are constrained to fit the classical model of a medium.

Time-resolved fluorescence quenching measurements of the aggregation numbers of normal sodium alkyl sulfate micelles well above the critical micelle concentrations

Article Abstract:

The aggregation numbers (N(sub A)) of normal sodium alkyl sulfate micelles were measured using time-resolved fluorescence quenching in order to find out if N(sub A) is dependent on the value of total counterion concentration (Na+)aq. Experimental values are also determined for the constant kappa2 by using equation 3 in computing for N(sub A) and estimating the values of gamma using equation 4. Results show that N(sub A) is constant if the total counterion concentration is also kept constant. This holds true for conjugate pairs of combinations of detergent and salt concentrations even if the surfactant concentration is doubled.
