Unmixing of polymer blends confined in ultrathin films: Crossover between two-dimensional and three-dimensional behavior

Article Abstract:

The interplay between chain conformations and phase separation in binary symmetric polymer mixtures confined into thin films by 'neutral' hark walls by Monte Carlo simulations is investigated. It is concluded that strong deviations from the Flory-Huggins theory occur as long as the unperturbed chain dimension exceeds the film thickness, and the critical behavior falls in the universality class of the two-dimensional Ising model for any finite value of film thickness.

Thin films of liquid crystals confined between crystalline surfaces

Article Abstract:

Surface force balance technique was used to study thermotropic liquid crystals (LC's) confined between two crystalline surfaces. It is demonstrated that increased humidity diminished anchoring of LC's to the surface.

Optical microscopy study for director patterns around disclinations in side-chain liquid crystalline polymer films

Article Abstract:

Polarizing optical microscopy is employed to study director fields around disclinations in side-chain liquid crystalline polymer films. Optical black brushes together with stripes around disclinations are observed.
