X-ray photoemission for probing charging/discharging dynamics

Article Abstract:

A novel technique shows that the dynamics of the charging/discharging of dielectric surface structures could be probed by examining the frequency dependence, upon subjecting the sample to externally applied voltage pulses while recording X-ray photo emission (XPS) spectra. This technique converts XPS into a powerful and noncontact impedance spectrometer with an added advantage of chemical resolution and specificity, which could be useful for analyses of fragile organic layers.

Protein-poly(silicic) acid interactions at the air/solution interface

Article Abstract:

The structure of the interface generated by a spread layer of beta-casein on an aqueous colloidal poly(silicic) acid subphase is examined using C-rays and neutrons. The use of multiple contrasts enables the scattering from the protein and the subphase to be decoupled to allow the surface excess of protein and volume fraction of water at the interface to be evaluated without assumptions regarding the volume of the protein.

Probing rapid ion transfer across a nanoscopic liquid-liquid interface

Article Abstract:

Steady-state voltammetry at nanometer-sized pipet electrodes were used to measure rapid kinetics of tetraalkylammonium ion transfers (ITs) across the interface between water and 1,2-dichloroethane. An independent estimate of the orifice radius and the thickness of the glass wall were obtained by using a nanopipet as a scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) tip.
