The stability of the ferrocenyl group in aqueous, aerobic media, the accessibility of a large variety of derivatives, and its favorable electrochemical properties have made ferrocene and its derivatives very popular molecules for biological applications. Various bioconjugates of ferrocene with amino and peptides, proteins, RNA, DNA, and harmones and others are discussed.

Genomics has expanded the target base for new antimicrobials and the mutagenesis experiments in a variety of microbes have suggested that literally hundreds of proteins are indispensable for the growth of any given microorganism.
