Chemistry of metal and semimetal cluster ions

Article Abstract:

Pure elemental metallic and semimetallic clusters, mixed-metal clusters and clusters with elements such as nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur were discussed. The methods used for the study of cluster ion chemistry were high-pressure flow kinetics systems, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and ion beam scattering. The clusters of boron, aluminum, carbon and silicon were analyzed and compared from past studies. The study on transition metal clusters covered reactions with hydrogen, benzene and some tetramer and pentamer complexes.

High-resolution measurements of integral cross sections in ion-molecule reactions from low-energy-guided crossed-beam experiments

Article Abstract:

A novel apparatus for the measurement of cross sections of ion-molecule reactions with high-energy resolution at low collision velocities was developed. The instrument consisted of a guided-ion-beam tandem linked with a supersonic molecular beam. Reactions of Ar+ and N2+ with molecular hydrogen and deuterium, Ar+ with N2, and N+ with hydrogen and deuterium were presented. It was concluded that extensive knowledge on ion-molecule mechanisms was achievable by incorporating collisional, spectroscopic and coincidence techniques.

Ion-molecule reactions of distonic radical cations

Article Abstract:

The reactivity of the distonic radical cations of cyclopropane, ethers, ketones, halides, esters, ethanol and amines were investigated by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometers. Several techniques for the characterization of distonic ions were applied prior to the experiment. Different results were observed on the reactivity of specific distonic cations.
